It is a great pleasure to introduce myself to all of you who share with me a long-standing attachment to Stanford. As you can read in my bio I am not a Stanford alumnus, but I taught many years at Stanford, both in Florence and on the home campus. I think this is the main reason Beppe Mammarella thought of me when he decided to pull back from his involvement in the Siena Seminar which he launched years ago. Needless to say, I feel honored to be trusted to take his place and I will do my best to continue on his path. It helps me to know that he will still be with us with his experience and advice. Actually, we will be able to enjoy his competence and company since he has agreed to join us for an informal conversation on current affairs during the seminars. In connection with the creation of the cultural association named "Beppe's friends" it was decided to continue with the traditional Siena Seminar from September 15th to 23rd, 2024. We will once again be based at Villa Scacciapensieri, beloved by past participants who not only appreciated all of its amenities, including its bucolic location with its enchanting gardens and delightful swimming pool, but also its close proximity to downtown Siena which is easily reachable by public bus. In addition to our traditional academic offerings, which include classes on Italian and European politics, Italian cinema, and language, we will also feature exciting site visits to the charming hill towns of Arezzo and Cortona, as well as the walled town of Volterra, and the wine district of Sassicaia. As in past editions, the specialized travel agency, Effetto Italy, will be handling all of the logistical aspects of the Seminar and will be able to answer any questions you might have as well as assist you with any specific needs or arrangements. I hope to see you all in Tuscany. All the best,
Roberto D'Alimonte
